CANDLE ON THE BLUFF

The New Olivet Baptist Church in assocation with the Morehouse College Alumni Association: Memphis Chapter invites you to "Up From Here"; the annual Candle On The Bluff Awards Celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
I'm very honored and excited to be performing at this years event. My first big-band performance was at the very first annual award show.  I sang the timeless classic "Fly Me To The Moon".  After that experience, I was hooked!   This year, I'll be back! My brother Kameron, the University of Memphis' Southern Comfort, The New Olivet Choir, and the Morehouse College Glee Club, will also be part of the experience.

Admission is FREE so if you're in the Memphis area on April 3rd, 2009, come by the CANNON Center at 7pm to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. :-)

AN UNFORGETTABLE CHRiSTMAS

This was probably the most fulfilling Christmas i've had in a long while. Probably because I came without any expectations, solely to be in the company, and enjoy, my family and friends.
*The "Night at PF" will be a night that will go down in history, thanks to Amber, Shena, and Ashley. [HA! It's amazing what secrets and liquor will do.]
*The day 'shopping' with George was full of what we do best, slaying.
Christmas Eve @ the "White" House...
Huey's with Terrance: simply, thank you. Smile on. Smile on.

CHRiSTMAS with the WHALUMS [& extended family]... truly Unforgettable. Mom, Dad, Skooter, Kameron, & KODIE! LOVE YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!! It makes me sad to go back to Atlanta. sigh.

MY FAVORiTE EPiSODE : FRESH PRiNCE

This is by far the best scene from a television show that I've ever seen in my entire life. period. I remember the first time I saw this episode, back in 1994, and i feel the same emotion now that i did then. The scene comes from season four's episode: Papa's Got A Brand New Excuse. This scene is the reason I started my TV show DVD collection.

I waited years for this particular episode to come on TV just so i could see this, but I never succeeded. So, when Fresh Prince finally decided to come out on DVD, i couldn't resist. Anyways, Will's father Lou shows up after a fourteen year absence and basically gets Will's hopes up of starting a new life with him. That doesn't happen and Will gives the most amazing performance, IMO, of television, and screen. Watch:

Simply amazing, and gut-wrenching. If you weren't touched by that, something's wrong with you and you should be shipped to a far away place. sigh. this, is acting at it's best. personally raw.

I sit here facing a day where so much has to be accomplished in so little time. But...

Thank you, mom and dad, for pushing me when i feel too weak to pull myself along.
Thank you, brothers, for being the quintessential talents that you are and motivating me to 'go for it.'
Thank you, Joy and George, for simply being you.
Thank you, buddy, for giving me another reason to smile.
Thank You, Lord. Thank You, for You.

GOSPEL ACCORDiNG TO JAZZ 3 : PREViEW

So... FINALLY, a preview of what i've been waiting SOOO long for.  My uncle Kirks third installment of his "Gospel According to Jazz" series.  It features Kirk Whalum, Kevin Whalum, Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum, Kenneth Whalum III, ME - KORTLAND WHALUM, and Kyle Whalum.  It was truly a family affair. Lalah Hathaway, Jerry Peters and George Duke also contribute to this musical timepiece.  I'm so happy to be a part of it.  Wow....

KENNETH FEATURED IN 'COMMERCIAL APPEAL'

Big Brother Skooter has a dope article in Memphis' leading newspaper The Commercial Appeal. Check Out the video and a snippet of the article below:

[that's Little "Big" Brother Kameron on trombone!]

On dancing with Beyonce:
“She’s just so beautiful,” Whalum said. “She motioned to me. I was standing on the side of the dance floor. She was acting like she was playing the sax. She’s like, ‘Come on.’ --- “I didn’t want to get too close ’cause that’s the boss man’s wife. So, I just danced around. But in my head I’m thinking, ‘Man, if mom and dad could see this. If my ex-girlfriends could see this there would be no debate. I win.’”

On Maxwell:
“He’s probably the coolest guy I’ve ever worked with. He’s really down to earth.”

“I’m a prime example of what can be done if you just put yourself in the right position.”
