Betty Carter was an American jazz singer renowned for her improvisational technique and idiosyncratic vocal style. Carter was born as Lillie Mae Jones in Flint, Michigan and grew up in Detroit, where her father led a church choir. She studied piano at the Detroit Conservatory. She won a talent contest and became a regular on the local club circuit, singing and playing piano. When she was 16, she sang with Charlie Parker, and she later performed with Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis.
When she went to college, her mother encouraged her to pray every morning and gave her a new black Bible with gold lettering on the front. "I've had that Bible since way before Dreamgirls," she says. "But when we were doing auditions, I wrote in the back of the Bible, 'I will get the role in Dreamgirls and I will win an Academy Award for it, in Jesus name I pray. Amen.' Everything I wrote came to pass. Every single thing. It's God. I have the proof. Sometimes it even scares me. I'm like, Jesus, how close are you?"
these boys sing. all of 'em. kris allen is one of the finalists that will be competing for that american idol crown next tuesday night. here's his take on kanye west's "heartless". bumps.

Below is the new trailer for the Oprah Winfery/Tyler Perry backed film "Precious," based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire. The film stars comic Mo'Nique and features Paula Patton and Mariah Carey.
deep. Below are two pics from when I was able to talk to the duo earlier this year.
I'm usally not a fan of 'fan made' remixes but this one, in particular, really caught me by surprise. A young guy by the name of Orlando Dixon, made a little duet of my favorite J Hud song, If This Isn't Love. [He sings!] Now, if only Orlando could get 'demo' in the right hands, it has potential to be a radio hit. With a professional's touch of mixing and some mastering, it could be a winner. [Also, I'd love to see what Robert - of Day26 -, or even Mario, could do with this.... HOLLA!!!!!!!]
lookin' good Miss Hudson. This is Hudson's second time gracing the Essence cover. Speaking of Jen Hudson, she's up for two BET Awards this year. Best Female Artist and Best Actress... She is up against the incredible Beyonce so we will see what happens.
This Holiday season comes Disney's FIRST African-American animated feature film. It features voices from Terrance Howard, Jennifer Lewis, Oprah Winfrey, and DreamgirlAnika Noni Rose, as Princess Tiana.
I'm definitely looking forward to this one. Good look for Miss Rose. The Dreamsare really doing it up after their separation!
so i was doing my daily search of Jen Hud and came across this whacko who made this comment to jen and other american idols [lol]:
LaVette is no fan of “American Idol,” the fast avenue to fame for new artists.
“I think it’s the most awful thing ever,” she said. “I think for Jennifer Hudson to be on the front cover of Vogue and Gladys Knight still hasn’t been on there, I don’t like that at all,” she said. “Anyone of them who has won so far, I wish they would send one of them to one of my gigs. I want to come on first, then I want them to come on."
Girl, I wish I knew who you were.. And I wish Fantasia OR Jen would take you up on that offer. thanks. Below is Miss LaVette singing a cover of The Who's classic "Love Reign".
Miss Bettye is a soul singer who cut her first record at 16, but achieved only intermittent fame until her 2005 record, I've Got My Own Hell to Raise. But i'll give it to her, she just sang!
in the words of B. Scott, "Little BOOOOW WOOOOOW!!" hahaha.. has a new video out... uhm... i don't know if this is real or not considering he clearly made this from his laptop while staying in one place the entire time. Check it out:
Ciara and Justin Timberlake performed their hit "Love Sex & Magic" on SNL tonight... Peep the performance below. Also, the sax player is my brother Kenneth 3. :-)
Here's a new track from ex-Danity Kaner Dawn Richard. Reportedly, it's just a demo for Rihanna's upcoming disc. However, it's HOT [and Dawn sings]!!!! I wish this was for a new Danity Kane LP, but.... whatever. ENJOY!!!
here's miss milian's take on the song "diamonds" which features kanye west. i posted another version of the song done by Teairra Marie. anyways, they're almost identical, IMO... [especially vocal stylings]. i'd love to here miss beyonce over this beat... she'd rip it.
Beyonce performs Deja Vu/Crazy In Love at her show in Prague. No other words are necessary. Just watch. And peep the Jay-Z dance break down at the 2:40 mark.... HOT!!!
All things LOVE, baby!
So yeah, this isn't a blog to be taken seriously, really. Its just kinda of like my "public diary" to my family and friends. You're gonna see a lot of J. Hud & Beyonce, but that's just me. :-D hey, you gotta LOVE me!!!
