Jennifer Hudson won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as Effie White in the film version of 'Dreamgirls.' Now another "American Idol" star has been cast in the touring company of the musical!
Syesha Mercado, the second runner-up on the seventh season, will take on the role of Deena Jones -- played by Beyoncé in the movie -- when the production begins performances at the Apollo Theater in New York City on Nov. 7, with an opening scheduled for Nov. 22. The world-renown theater is celebrating its 75th anniversary season in 2009-2010.
"When we started planning this new production, I knew it was time to finally bring Dreamgirls to the Apollo. Throughout its history, the Apollo has been known as a proving ground where new talent has been discovered and nurtured and careers have been launched," said producer John Breglio. "And that's what Dreamgirls is all about. The very first scene in Dreamgirls takes place right here at the Apollo's famous Amateur Night. What better place to launch a new production of this groundbreaking show?"
The limited run will play the Harlem venue through Dec. 6 and then begin touring the country.
The cast also includes Moya Angela as Effie White, Adrienne Warren takes on the role of Lorrell Robinson and Margaret Hoffman will play Michelle Morris.

It’s been reported that Jennifer Hudson gave birth late last night.According to sources, Jennifer Hudson and fiancee David Otunga welcomed their son late last night on the hush with not a speck of paparazzi in sight. Seeing as the two opted not to know the sex of the baby, they brought both pink and blue clothes to be on the safe side. From what we know, the baby weighed in at seven pounds, fourteen ounces and was named David Daniel Otunga, Jr. after his father.
No name or picture have surfaced but y’all know we got y’all as soon as the ink dries on J.Hud’s baby photo check. On a serious note, we are so glad to see a happy ending to the sorrow J.Hud has experienced in the past couple months.

Isn't this something... On tomorrow, the stars of the Oscar-winning movie DREAMGIRLS, will have their own respective movies hitting the shelves. We have multiple Grammy winner Beyonce in Obsessed, Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx in The Soloist, and Grammy and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson in Fragments.Focused on a group of survivors who must face life on different terms after shots ring out and the early morning tranquility of a diner shatters, Fragments finds each character transforming in unexpected ways.
Also featuring Dakota Fanning (The Secret Life of Bees), Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) and Jeanne Tripplehorn (Winged Creatures), Fragments was shot before both Whitaker and Hudson won Oscars for their respective roles in The Last King of Scotland(2006) and Dreamgirls(2006).
Derek Charles is a hard working man, employed as a asset manager in a private company. He is very happy with his beautiful wife, Sharon, and only son, and because of his hard work he just got a huge promotion. However, this new girl is desperate to get close to him - at any cost.
In 2005, the only thing hurting Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez more than his face from a recent bike accident was his pressing need for story ideas. That is when he discovers Nathaniel Ayers, a mentally ill, homeless street musician who possesses extraordinary talent, even through his half-broken instruments. Inspired by his story, Lopez writes an acclaimed series of articles about Ayers and attempts to do more to help both him and the rest of the underclass of LA have a better life. However, Lopez's good intentions run headlong in the hard realities of the strength of Ayers' personal demons and the larger social injustices facing the homeless. Regardless, Lopez and Ayers must find a way to conquer their deepest anxieties and frustrations to hope for a brighter future for both of them.
